‘When looking at an individual letterform we are confronted by what is essentially an abstract image, as a letter only begins to exercise the ability to communicate semantic information when it is placed in the collective context of the other 25 characters of the alphabet.’ Having explored Univers through various processes of abstraction, this book looks to remove subjective decision making and only relies on the purest form of typographic abstraction, the individual letterform. The letters a and z are aligned to the to the top, bottom and right edges of the paper, in order to maintain a constant point size. They are presented in all of Univers’ 22 digital weights with the resulting abstraction controlled objectively by the typeface. The letter ‘n’ was put through the same process for a series of A0 prints.
